Ask almost anyone how often a vehicle needs to get their oil changed and the answer is probably "change the oil each 3,000 miles". This response seems to be accepted as a basic standard for most people.

The important question is: "is it really required to get the oil replaced this frequently?" Alas, there is no simple response. There are a lot of factors that come into play such as age and driving conditions of the vehicle and how the much it is used.

It's like how many times you wash your hair. There are those who have to lather up daily while others get away with washing every few days . The crucial difference is that it is plain to see when hair needs a shampoo, not so obvious with a car engine! It would be a different story if we could easily view how much sludge was accumulating in the engine oil and organize a trip to the auto shop before it became serious.

So, who do you turn to for information? It is probably best to consult your owner's manu al for the vehicle. You will find detailed instructions on when to change the oil change. You might be astonished at how different the manufacturer's guidelines are from the accepted 3000 mile rule.

As an example, let's look at the user manual for an automatic 2004 Honda Accord sedan, 6-cylinder model. The recommendation is the "Replace engine oil every 7,500 miles or every 1 year, whichever comes first". The surprising part is that the manufacturer advises that you wait two and a half times longer than the conventional rule of 3000 miles.

So, what does that mean in real life? Well let's assume that the driver of the 2004 Honda Accord drives an average of 15,000 miles a year. If a regular oil change costs about $ 30 and requires 4.5 quarts of oil and takes about 20 minutes, then here are the totals after one year:
